Cake

  • 2 Cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1½ Cups Granulated Sugar
  • ¾ Cup Cocoa Powder ((unsweetened))
  • 1½ tsp. Baking Powder
  • 1½ tsp. Baking Soda
  • ½ tsp. Salt
  • 1½ Cups Unsweetened Almond Milk ((or any plant-based milk))
  • ½ Cup Applesauce
  • ⅓ Cup Vegetable Oil
  • 2 tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Cup Water ((boiling))

Frosting

  • 1 Cup Plant-Based Butter
  • 3½ Cups Powdered Sugar
  • ½ Cup Cocoa Powder ((unsweetened))
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • ¼ Cup Unsweetened Almond Milk ((or any plant-based milk))

Cake

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Grease two 8-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.

  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together dry ingredients.

  4. Add wet ingredients.

  5. Mix until well combined.

  6. Gradually pour in the boiling water while stirring. The batter will be thin.

  7. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.

  8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  9. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting

  1. While the cakes cool, prepare the chocolate frosting. In a mixing bowl, beat softened vegan butter until creamy.

  2. Gradually add powdered ingredients while continuing to beat.

  3. Stir in wet ingredients until you achieve a smooth and spreadable consistency.

  4. Once the cakes are completely cooled, frost the top of one cake layer. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake with the remaining chocolate frosting.
