Ingredients
  

Cake

  • 2 Cups All-Purpose Flour
  • Cups Granulated Sugar
  • ¾ Cup Cocoa Powder (unsweetened)
  • tsp. Baking Powder
  • tsp. Baking Soda
  • ½ tsp. Salt
  • Cups Unsweetened Almond Milk (or any plant-based milk)
  • ½ Cup Applesauce
  • Cup Vegetable Oil
  • 2 tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Cup Water (boiling)

Frosting

  • 1 Cup Plant-Based Butter
  • Cups Powdered Sugar
  • ½ Cup Cocoa Powder (unsweetened)
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • ¼ Cup Unsweetened Almond Milk (or any plant-based milk)

Instructions
 

Cake

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease two 8-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together dry ingredients.
    2 Cups All-Purpose Flour, 1½ Cups Granulated Sugar, ¾ Cup Cocoa Powder, 1½ tsp. Baking Powder, 1½ tsp. Baking Soda, ½ tsp. Salt
  • Add wet ingredients.
    1½ Cups Unsweetened Almond Milk, ½ Cup Applesauce, ⅓ Cup Vegetable Oil, 2 tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • Mix until well combined.
  • Gradually pour in the boiling water while stirring. The batter will be thin.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting

  • While the cakes cool, prepare the chocolate frosting. In a mixing bowl, beat softened vegan butter until creamy.
  • Gradually add powdered ingredients while continuing to beat.
    3½ Cups Powdered Sugar, ½ Cup Cocoa Powder
  • Stir in wet ingredients until you achieve a smooth and spreadable consistency.
    1 tsp. Vanilla Extract, ¼ Cup Unsweetened Almond Milk
  • Once the cakes are completely cooled, frost the top of one cake layer. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake with the remaining chocolate frosting.
  • Decorate with vegan chocolate shavings or fresh berries if desired.
